How to develop an EPD

Creating an EPD follows a clear, internationally standardized process. While each product and sector has specific requirements, the basic workflow includes:

1.
Choose an appropiate PCR
2.
Conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
3.
Compile the EPD report using the template
4.
Submit your EPD for third-party verification
5.
Register and publish your verified EPD

1

Select a PCR

  • Every EPD is developed under a PCR, which defines rules for a specific product group.
  • PCRs ensure consistency and comparability between EPDs of similar products.
  • Use our PCR Finder Tool to search for available PCRs by sector.
  • If your product is not covered by an existing PCR, you may propose a new one through EPD International.

2

Conduct a Life Cycle Assessment

  • Companies must independently hire an LCA practitioner to conduct the analysis.
  • Practitioners can be selected from our LCA Practitioner List or elsewhere, as long as they are familiar with the International EPD® System.
  • The LCA must follow the selected PCR and be performed using approved modeling tools.
Remember

Make sure the LCA practitioner you hire understands both the PCR requirements and the EPD system rules.

3

Compiling EPD data

  • Compile the results of the LCA study along with required additional information into the EPD reporting format.
  • Register the EPD using either the Standard PDF format or the EPD Compiler digital format for direct submission to the EPD Portal.
  • Ensure the EPD content is accurate, verifiable, neutral, and compliant with ISO 14020 and, for construction products, EN 15804 and EN 15942 standards.

4

Third-Party Verification

  • The draft EPD report must be reviewed by an approved independent verifier to ensure methodological compliance and accuracy.
  • You must choose a verifier from the official list available in our portal, in line with EPD International’s rules.
  • The verifier will check your LCA model, assumptions, and data before approving it for publication.

5

Register and Publish Your Verified EPD

  • Once your EPD has been successfully verified by an approved third-party verifier, it is ready for official registration and publication.
  • The final EPD report, along with the verification statement and supporting documents, must be submitted to EPD Saudi Arabia through the designated portal.

  • Our team will conduct a final review to ensure completeness and compliance with the International EPD® System’s General Programme Instructions (GPI).

  • Upon approval, your EPD will be:

Assigned a unique EPD number

Published on the EPD Saudi Arabia platform

Listed on the International EPD System (environdec.com), making it globally recognized and accessible

You will receive a direct link to your published EPD, which can be used in project documentation, ESG reports, procurement submissions, and marketing materials.

Remember

All published EPDs must be maintained through an active annual membership.
